Effective July 2006, pedigrees will be required for
all drugs shipped within Florida; other states to follow.
To combat increasing incidences of drug tampering in the United
States, a growing number of states have begun issuing regulations intended to
secure the flow of prescription drugs from manufacturers to distributors and
pharmacies.
Under these regulations, every bottle of a pharmaceutical item
must be matched with a corresponding record detailing the drug’s movement
through the supply chain. This electronic pedigree will certify the
authenticity of the item and the channel that it has followed from the
manufacturer to the healthcare provider. Each time the item changes hands,
information must be added to the pedigree to document the chain of custody.
The new laws require that the following information be provided in
the pedigree:
- Manufacturer’s Name
- Product Name
- Item Lot Number
- Expiration Date
- Ship From Location
- Ship To Location
