Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an evolving technology that is quickly being adopted by major Retailers as a new compliance standard. An RFID tag is a label embedded with a microchip and antenna. The tag contains identification information that is read by a device called an interrogator.

Whereas standard barcode labels depend on line-of-sight contact with an infrared scanner, RFID tags pass through a zone where an interrogator is stationed. Tags do not have to be visible to the eye or aligned in any particular way to be read. Large quantities of cartons and pallets can pass through the zone without the need to individually scan each barcode.
